Understanding Your NDIS Plan: What Every Gold Coast Participant Should Know
Your NDIS plan is the document that sets out your goals, your funded supports, and how much money you have to spend. It can look complicated the first time you read it. This guide walks you through every section so you can use your plan with confidence.
Start your intake →The Three Parts of Your NDIS Plan
Every NDIS plan has three main sections: your personal details and disability information, your goals and aspirations, and your funded supports broken into budget categories. The goals section is important — supports need to link back to what you want to achieve in life. Taking time to clearly state your goals during planning means your budget is more likely to reflect what you actually need.
How Your NDIS Budget Works
Your funding is divided into support categories, each with its own budget. You can only spend each category's funds on supports within that category. Some budgets are flexible, meaning you can shift money between certain line items; others are fixed. Understanding which of your budgets are flexible helps you make the most of your plan without accidentally overspending in one area.
Plan Management: Who Handles Your Money
You have three options for managing your NDIS funds: self-managed (you pay providers directly), plan-managed (a plan manager handles invoices on your behalf), or NDIA-managed (the NDIA pays providers directly). Plan management gives you more choice of providers while keeping the admin off your plate. Talk to your support coordinator or LAC about which option suits your situation.
Progress Notes and Why They Matter
Every shift your support worker delivers should be recorded in progress notes — detailed records of what was done, how you went, and any observations relevant to your wellbeing. Progress notes protect you as a participant by creating a clear record of the supports you have received. They are also essential at plan review time to show the NDIA what has been working and where you need more support.
What to Do If Your Plan Does Not Reflect Your Needs
If your plan feels underfunded or misses important supports, you can request a plan review. Gather evidence from your support worker, therapists, and doctors showing the gap between what your plan covers and what you actually need. You can also request an unscheduled review at any time if your circumstances change significantly, such as a move or a change in your health.

Frequently asked questions
How often is my NDIS plan reviewed?
Most plans run for 12 months before a scheduled review, though some participants receive longer plans. You can also request an unscheduled review if your needs change before that date.
Can I use my NDIS plan with PurpleCare on the Gold Coast?
Yes. PurpleCare supports participants across the Gold Coast and Northern NSW. Whether your plan is NDIA-managed or plan-managed, we can work within your funding to deliver the supports you need.
What happens if I run out of NDIS funding before my plan ends?
Contact your support coordinator or the NDIA as soon as possible. You may be able to request an unscheduled plan review to have your funding reassessed if your needs have changed.
